Nothing But Nets in Zimbabwe

Between 2007 and 2012, the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign has worked with the campaign's founding partner, The United Methodist Church, to send and distribute 69,125 life-saving bed nets in Zimbabwe.

In 2007, Nothing But Nets and The United Methodist Church visited local hospitals, clinics, and orphanages in Zimbabwe to better understand the impact of malaria and to distribute bed nets to those in need. Nothing But Nets joined the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church on their bi-yearly visit to their partner church, the Zimbabwe Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church, in Mutare. Also, during this trip, Nothing But Nets worked with local community health workers to support the training of over 200 local pastors to help them spread the message to their home congregations and communities that malaria kills and nets save lives.

The Joy of Nets

The "malaria season" in Zimbabwe lasts from October to June, same as the rainy season. This is when malaria becomes the leading killer of children in 47 of 61 districts.

Dr. Colleta Kibassa, on the front lines of Zimbabwe’s fight against malaria, says, “When you have an enemy you use any means necessary. There is such a need to get insecticide-treated nets to more families."

So when nets provided by Nothing But Nets supporters arrived to Chitora, Zimbabwe, mothers celebrated. They sang, danced, and clapped with joy, waving their nets high.

Each long-lasting bed net distributed means another child spared from malaria. Mothers can now tuck their children beneath blue nets to sleep soundly, safe from the bites of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

A simple bed net can bring joy across Zimbabwe—and across Africa.
