"It's hard to imagine that malaria would be a problem in Mali, but the culprit is the Niger River. As it snakes and bisects the entire width of the country, it becomes the source of enormous pockets and lagoons of standing water and forms a huge inland delta. Ideal mosquito breeding grounds. This is what makes malaria the number one killer of children under the age of five in Mali, " explains Dr. Steven Phillips.

Dr. Phillips, then the Medical Director for Global Issues & Projects at ExxonMobil, was in Mali as part of an integrated health campaign bringing bed nets and vaccines to children under age five.  Overall, about 2.1 million people living in malarious regions of Mali received long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets.
